Seeds of Peace

10/19/08 | LINK

Adam Stehle and Todd Street of TSP journeyed to Aqaba, Jordan to participate in and document a Seeds of Peace graduate conference. Seeds of Peace is an organization dedicated to empowering the leaders of the next generation.

The focus was on SOP graduates who have achieved positions of power and influence in government, media, education, medicine and community leadership. Three days, and many conversations later, it became clear that Seeds of Peace is an effective organization that is slowly but surely changing the mindset of the younger generation to embrace the value of peace. It became evident that even if peace treaties in troubled areas were to be signed today, real peace would be very difficult without a mind shift of the public. That’s where SOP comes in.

Adam and Todd produced a film illustrating the effectiveness of SOP, and how by empowering the leaders of the next generation, they are influencing the hearts and minds of the average citizen towards achieving truly lasting peace. This film was shown at the SOP fund-raising gala in May 2008. Please click on the button to see it for yourself.

Meet Shaffy

The SOS Children program is the world’s largest orphan charity providing schooling and a “family-based” environment to children in need. With 191 schools worldwide and several hundred thousand students, SOS succeeds in bettering theses orphans’ education, standard of living and future potential.

In December of 2007, Todd journeyed to Rwanda, where he visited with the SOS Kigali Primary School, which was responsible for saving 630 children affected by the 1993 genocides. As he was touring the facilities and leaning about the programs he met Shaffy, one of Kigali’s brightest students. Shaffy told Todd how much he loved computer science, and what he believed he could accomplish beyond his education with his own laptop. Inspired by Shaffy’s determination, Todd returned to the US and sent Shaffy his own laptop.

“You are the person who I will thank up from now to end of my life.” -Shaffy

Todd and Shaffy now remain in contact through e-mail. Shaffy forwards Todd his report cards and his progress. His English and grades have both improved, and he is now third in his class.
“I showed the laptop to my dad and he was also very happy. It changed our lives. But also you are like my Dad because you did a big thing in my life.” -Shaffy
