I found a great website that i wanted to share with everyone. VolunteerMatch.org lets you search volunteering opportunities by location, interest area, organization name, or even skills. Maybe you want to help out at a museum, or clean up the riverfront, Volunteer Match makes it really easy to find those opportunities. I recently used the site and am now helping with a City Harvest cooking class (pictures coming soon to our social responsibility page, if I ever remember to take them….). So, although life seems really busy and it’s hard to think of squeezing anything else in, this site makes it easy to find something that in the end you’ll really enjoy doing.

Interactive Dinosaurs - An Anachronistic Yearning
10/30/08 | Category: Blog | LINK
Tags: animatroics | dinosaurs | interactive | toys | video
Since the Jurassic Park movie hit American screens 15 years ago, animatronic dinosaurs have moved from science museum geek-fare to roaring mainstream heart throb. By the time Jurassic Park 3 came to DVD, nobody wanted to ever see an animatronic dinosaur ever again (even though their performance was more believable than the actual actors in the movie).
Well the pendulum is swinging back again and Kola the interactive triceratops is becoming the new dino-ambassador to today’s youth. Instead of dripping jaws ripping people out of jungle outhouses, this dinosaur plays music, squaks, eats, has 11 interactive touch sensors, supports up to 60 pounds of weight, and is just an all-around adorable little guy. It doesn’t actually walk so riding it like a Flinstones era big wheel is off the table…unless your one of those Make Magazine people with too much time on their hands.
Check out the video:
Did I mention that they’re $300 and that I want one?

Star Trek In Real Life: The Holodeck

Today we bring you news of a prototype demonstrating simulated tactile feedback. Basically it’s “virtual touching.” Creepy!
Imagine begin able to load any 3D model into a program that then displayed it’s “surface” virtually so that you could feel it. Imagine that this surface could also move and ungulate in a way you could actually feel and interact with. That’s right! Virtual teddy bears are on their way…or at least that’s what we were thinking over here.

Mondrian Game Boy Noise Fun Wow

Straight from the bookmarking archives of our intrepid media department comes a strange and wonderful music video. It’s for a song by the emminently popular Dane artist Bjorn Svin and the piece is called Modular Noia. Ever heard of Bjorn? Well neither have we.
We were however impressed with the simple yet effective use of color and basic geometric shapes. While it does seem simple, any seasoned After Effects artist can tell you that whoever made this video spent a LOT of time in front of his computer essentially playing with digital toy blocks. If only we could be so lucky.
Enjoy!

Viewzi - A Multi-Faceted Visual Search
10/22/08 | Category: Blog | LINK
Tags: 3D | browser | interface | photo | photos | viewer
Viewzi is a web and browser tool (still in beta) that turns various types of common internet searches into interactive visual searches. While it’s a nifty concept, it’s not exactly a traditional search killer. It’s more of a neat idea that’s a little too system-intensive to be a practical every-day tool.
That’s not to say that it doesn’t have it’s uses.
If you’re a web designer and you need to see some quick screen shots of the top 10 online pet stores or if you were doing some personal research into Lindsay Lohan’s latest paparazzi fare, Viewzi is for you.
Whatever you do, make sure you check out all the various search functions (they’re in the top bar) and see if you can apply them to your online life.
Give it a shot. (defaults to search for “flowers”)

Practical iPhone Apps On The Way?

Most everyone these days has nice things to say about the iPhone. Some claims are well deserved while others are more wishful thinking.
This blog author has always been impressed with the over-arching themes of the iPhone while disappointed with most of the applications that have been created for it. Sure, lots of them have the wow factor of a new interface paradigm but what do they really help you do better than a traditional portable omni-device.
After over a year of observing the iPhone in the wild, actual helpful applications are starting to surface. The key to such quality applications is that designers have stopped trying to convert previous well-known applications into an iPhone version, but actually designing applications from scratch focused on the strengths of the device.

A great example of such an application is Instapaper. Instapaper is an application that allows you to easily bookmark pages that sync offline with your device. The service includes a feature where you add all your favorite sites to an online profile and then your iPhone constantly downloads and updates the site for time-accurate offline viewing.
Why is this so amazing? Well it gets around the wireless speed restrictions we suffer from here in the USA by downloading pages and making them viewable anytime…including our wonderful New York City subways. By utilizing a simple concept and designing to the strength of the device this application turns your iPhone into a little internet that’s always available.
While it may seem mind-numblingly simple, most of the best applications out there are. That’s what makes them great (remember the first time you saw the google search page?) I will also applaud any application that brings us closer to the quidessential Star Trek tricorder and/or reading tablet…although i never saw a tricorder play MP3s or run Doom.
So maybe we’ll have one up on the Romulans the next time they try to attack.

Courtsey of T-Mobile comes the first review of the premiere Google Android phone. The OS is still in it’s infancy and because of it’s open-source platform nature, it will take longer to develop than the iPhone. it’s features however weak now will eventually overtake the Blackberry and iPhone (probably within the next two years).
